In fact, we’ve spent the last decade on a mission to improve our efficiency and lower our CO2 emissions, achieving a whopping 40% reduction across the MINI range – so far.
From fuel-saving engine innovations to smart servicing, let’s take a look at some of the cutting-edge tech and handy hacks and that have helped us boost our MINI fuel efficiency and save you a few quid – without losing any of the fun that make us marvellously MINI.
IMPROVING MINI FUEL EFFICIENCY.
A lot of hard work, some serious science and very clever people have helped reduce our fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Here are just some of the features we’ve put in place:
BRAKE ENERGY REGENERATION.
Regenerative braking is a handy mechanism found in all our cars. It takes the usually wasted kinetic energy that’s created when you slow down and uses it to charge the battery – which runs things like your air-conditioning system and radio. That way, your engine is doing less work and less fuel is consumed.
SHIFT POINT DISPLAY.
This handy system helps you move into the most fuel-efficient gear at just the right time. An arrow will appear on your dashboard when it’s time to change up.
AUTO START/STOP.
This feature does what it says on the tin. Whenever your MINI is stationary (it could be stopped at traffic lights or perhaps you’ve pulled over) it automatically switches off the engine to save any fuel being used.
VOLUME-REGULATED OIL PUMP AND SWITCHABLE WATER PUMP.
The innovative oil pump delivers only as much oil that is needed by the engine at any one time. The result? Reduced drive power and fuel consumption. The on-demand water pump featured in the coolant circuit offers a similar effect. It’s only switched on when the engine has reached its regular operating temperature, helping to save fuel in the warming-up phase.
ELECTRIC POWER ASSISTED STEERING (EPAS).
EPAS is more efficient than hydraulic steering because it doesn't rely on a hydraulic pump powered by the engine, which can create drag and reduce fuel efficiency. Instead, it uses an electric motor to assist with steering, which only consumes energy when needed. Just what we like to hear.
IT’S ALL IN THE ENGINE.
When it comes to MINI fuel efficiency, our friction optimised and lightweight TwinPower Turbo engines are (quite literally) the main drivers. Direct injection pumps fuel straight into the combustion chamber at high pressure, while turbocharging tech increases the amount of air taken in and compressed – producing more power from each stroke. That gives you a drive that’s more fuel efficient and more economical, while still packing that unmistakeable MINI punch.
WE’RE EXCEEDING STANDARDS.
All fuel-powered cars must now comply with the Euro 6 standards for exhaust emissions – including nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide. And we’re proud to say that every single MINI model launched since 2014 (including the diesel cars) has met these strict standards. As well as making our cars kinder to the planet, you won’t have to pay to enter the clean air or ULEZ zones popping up in more places across the UK. So you can cruise into the city without having to pay for the privilege.
EMISSIONS-FREE THRILLS.
Reducing fuel consumption not enough? The all-electric MINI Cooper forgets fuel altogether, powered instead by an (easily) rechargeable battery and electric motor. Get ready for that trademark MINI spirit, style and go-kart handling – just with added electric efficiency and zero driving emissions.
