EU6 EMISSIONS STANDARDS: WHAT DO THEY MEAN FOR YOU?

All new cars sold – that’s both petrol and diesel models – must meet EU6 standards for exhaust emissions. This includes harmful emissions like nitrogen oxide (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO) and other pollutants. Reducing these emissions is a no-brainer, but it also has a knock-on effect that benefits everyday driving, with improved fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. That’s why we’re taking it seriously.

EU6 COMPLIANT.

Every new MINI model launched since 2014 meets the strictest EU6 emissions standards. This means your MINI diesel emits fewer harmful emissions due to the clean diesel technology fitted to EU6 compliant models. The best bit is that this new generation of cleaner diesel models comes with a host of benefits for you as a driver.

OUR COMMITMENT.

At MINI, we’re totally committed to building cars that aim to be more sustainable. In fact – the BMW Group is also the only one of the three automobile manufacturers listed to feature in the renowned Dow Jones Sustainability Indices index every year since 1999.

CLEAN AIR FRAMEWORK.

Great news for MINI drivers – if you’re driving a MINI diesel in the UK, you won’t face any penalty charges under the new Clean Air Frameworks. That’s because all MINIs are EU6 compliant, and have been since 2014. The Clean Air Framework from the Department of Transport states that EU6 diesels are exempt from penalty charges.

LOW EMISSION ZONE

LOW EMISSION ZONE.

Low emission zones were introduced in London back in 2008 for heavy polluting, large vehicles. LEZs also exist in Brighton, Norwich, Nottingham and Oxford, affecting buses. What does that mean for you? Well, you and your new MINI don’t need to worry about LEZs right now as it currently only impacts large vehicles.

ULTRA LOW EMISSION ZONE

ULTRA LOW EMISSION ZONE.

From September 2020 the Ultra Low Emission Zone will be an area where all cars, motorcycles, vans, minibuses, buses, coaches and heavy good vehicles will need to meet exhaust emission standards (ULEZ standards) or pay a daily travel charge when travelling inside London. What does that mean for you? You need to ensure your car meets the ULEZ standard, which is Euro 4 for petrol cars and Euro 6 for diesel cars – good news is that your modern MINI meets these standards.

T-CHARGE

T-CHARGE.

For drivers in London, you may want to take note of changes due to come into play. From 23 October 2017, cars, vans, minibuses, buses, coaches and HGVs will need to meet minimum exhaust emission standards, or pay a daily £10 Emissions Surcharge. This will be in addition to the Congestion Charge. What does that mean for you? Your car is not subject to the T-Charge as its registered after 1 January 2008. You can find more detail and check your cars registration at tfl.gov.uk

VEHICLE TYPE (Includes Hybrid Vehicles) MINIMUM EMISSION STANDARD T-CHARGE AMOUNT (If emission standard not met)
Cars and small vans (not exceeding 1,205kg unladen weight and not exceeding 3,500kg GVW) Euro 4 £10
Cars, taxis and private hire pas-senger vehicles with up to 8 seats in addition to the driver Euro 6 (diesel)
